Astrophotography by Walt Davis

The region of space surrounding Alnitak (a 1.7 magnitude left most star in Orion's Belt) is most commonly noted for NGC 2024 (The Flame Nebula) and IC 434 (The Horsehead Nebula). This  wide field view also contains: NGC 2023 (A nebula surrounding the bright star center of view) and IC 435 (a bright nebula surrounding a dimmer star to the left and bottom of view). This picture was taken with an Orion Starshoot DSCI II and Nikon 300mm f2.8 ED lens. By Walt Davis.

Notes
  • This is my first image of the Horsehead nebula and regions.

  • This is my first image with a dedicated astronomical CCD camera.

  • The star spikes are being created by light diffracting off the lens aperture ring.
